If you’re expecting your first baby, you’ve probably spent months preparing. You’ve chosen the nursery colors, washed tiny outfits, researched baby gear, and imagined what those first days together will feel like. And while there is so much excitement, there can also be a lot of uncertainty; especially when it comes to welcoming someone into your home for newborn photos.
One of the most common questions I hear from first-time parents is: “Do we need to clean our whole house before our newborn session?” The answer, by the way, is a resounding NO.
Your home doesn't need to be spotless, perfectly decorated, or look like it belongs in a magazine. Your newborn session isn't about creating a picture-perfect home, it’s about preserving the love, connection, and tiny details of the season you’re in right now.
The nursery you carefully prepared. The couch where you’ll spend countless hours rocking your baby. The window where morning light pours in while you hold your little one close. Those are the memories you’ll want to remember.
Here are a few simple ways to prepare your home for a relaxed and beautiful in-home newborn session.
1. Choose a Few Spaces to Tidy (Not Your Entire House)
Before your session, focus only on the areas where we are most likely to photograph. Most in-home newborn sessions take place in spaces with beautiful natural light, such as:
- The nursery
- Your bedroom
- The living room
A quick reset of these spaces is usually all you need. Put away things like laundry baskets, extra clutter, or items that may distract from the images. BUT don’t stress about making everything perfect. Life with a newborn is beautifully imperfect, and your home should still feel like home.
2. Open Your Curtains and Let the Light In
Natural light creates the soft, timeless look that makes newborn images feel warm and peaceful. Before I arrive, open curtains and blinds in the rooms we’ll be using. You don’t need special lighting or a perfectly designed space, your home’s natural light is often all we need.
If you aren’t sure which rooms have the best light, don’t worry. Part of my job is helping find the spaces that will photograph beautifully.
3. Prepare the Nursery, But Don’t Overthink It
Your baby’s nursery is one of the most meaningful spaces to capture because it represents all the love and anticipation that happened before they arrived.
You may want to:
- Straighten the crib bedding
- Arrange a few favorite books or keepsakes
- Put away extra baby supplies from changing areas
- Add sentimental details you want included
Maybe it’s the handmade blanket from a grandparent, the book you hope to read every night, or the tiny outfit you brought your baby home in. Those details tell your story.
4. Keep Baby’s Essentials Close By
Newborn sessions are designed to move at your baby’s pace. There will be breaks for feeding, diaper changes, rocking, and soothing...and those moments are completely normal. In fact, some of the sweetest images happen during those quiet pauses.
Keep nearby:
- Extra diapers and wipes
- A pacifier (if you plan to use one)
- A favorite blanket
- A burp cloth
- An extra outfit for baby
There’s no need to worry if your baby needs to stop. We have plenty of time.
5. Pick Out Comfortable Outfits Ahead of Time
Those first weeks with your baby are already full of change, so choosing outfits ahead of time can help you feel more prepared.
For parents, I recommend choosing clothing that feels comfortable and reflects your style. Soft colors, simple textures, and neutral tones tend to create a timeless look.
Think:
- Cozy sweaters
- Soft dresses
- Neutral layers
- Comfortable fabrics you can move and cuddle in
The most important thing is that you feel like yourself.
6. Keep Your Home Comfortable for Baby
Newborns are happiest when they are warm and cozy. Keeping your home slightly warmer than usual can help your baby stay comfortable during photos, especially for any images where they are wrapped or wearing fewer layers. Have blankets nearby, keep feeding supplies accessible, and create a calm environment where you and your baby can relax.
7. Don’t Worry If Baby Isn’t “Perfect”
One of the biggest fears many first-time parents have is: “What if my baby cries the whole time?”
Please know that your baby does not need to sleep perfectly or cooperate every minute for beautiful images to happen. Newborn sessions include all the moments that come with having a brand-new baby; the sleepy stretches, the tiny yawns, the feeding breaks, the cuddles, and even the moments when your baby just needs you. Those moments are part of your story.
8. Give Yourself Time to Settle In
The early days with a newborn can feel like a whirlwind. Give yourself permission to move slowly on session day. You don’t need to rush around trying to prepare everything at the last minute. Plan to take your time getting ready, feed your baby when needed, and trust that we will work around your family’s rhythm. The goal is for you to feel comfortable and present, not stressed.
Your baby will only be this tiny for a little while. The details that feel ordinary right now...the way their fingers curl around yours, the way they fit perfectly against your chest, the nursery you spent months preparing...will become the memories you treasure most.
An in-home newborn session allows you to preserve this season exactly as it is: your first days as a family, in the place where your story begins. Your home doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be yours.
Expecting your first (or second, third, fourth) baby? I would love to help you document this once-in-a-lifetime season in a way that feels natural, relaxed, and meaningful.
From tiny details to the first family cuddles, your newborn’s earliest days deserve to be remembered.
