One of my favorite things about motherhood sessions is that they don't have to be complicated. In fact, I think they're at their best when they feel like real life.

Yesterday, I packed a cooler with store-bought ice cream, grabbed my camera, and met up with two of my best friends and their three kiddos for an evening together. We weren't chasing a Pinterest-perfect setup or an extravagant location. We simply wanted to slow down, have fun, and capture this season of motherhood exactly as it is.

We headed to one of my favorite spots in Downtown Lynchburg, a quiet parking deck with beautiful views overlooking the city. It might not be the first place that comes to mind for photos, but that's one of the things I love most about photography. Sometimes the most unexpected places become the perfect backdrop.

As soon as the ice cream came out, the session took on a life of its own. There were tiny hands wrapped around cones, sprinkles scattered everywhere, and plenty of melting ice cream dripping faster than anyone could keep up with. The kids smiled and laughed, proudly showed off their colorful treats, and were completely content just being kids.

And their moms? They laughed right alongside them. They wiped sticky fingers, handed out extra baby wipes, and soaked in the kind of moments that often pass by unnoticed in the busyness of everyday life.

Watching my best friends with their children was such a beautiful reminder that motherhood isn't about perfection. It's about showing up. It's about comforting little ones when the ice cream falls off the cone, celebrating the excitement over a bowl of sprinkles, and smiling through the mess because you know these moments won't last forever.

As photographers, we often talk about preserving memories. But what we're really preserving are feelings. The way your child reaches for your hand without thinking. The sound of their laugh when something is absolutely hilarious. The smile they give you when they're proud of themselves. The way they look at you as if you're their whole world. These are the details that become priceless years down the road.

This session wasn't filled with perfectly posed portraits and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. It was filled with genuine connection, authentic laughter, and the kind of joy that can't be staged.

Looking through these images now, I don't just see three sweet kids enjoying ice cream. I see childhood. I see friendship. I see two incredible moms creating memories with their little ones, completely unaware of how beautiful the ordinary looked through my lens.

Those are the photographs that stand the test of time. The ones that tell your story exactly as it happened. The ones that bring you back to a feeling. Because one day, the ice cream cones will be bigger than the hands holding them now. The giggles will sound a little different. The hugs may become less frequent. But these photographs will always take them back to a warm summer evening, sharing a simple treat with the people who loved them most. And to me, that's what motherhood photography is all about. Not creating perfect moments, but preserving the beautifully imperfect ones that become our favorite memories.

Ready to create sweet memories of your own? Your family's story doesn't have to include elaborate plans or picture-perfect details. Sometimes all it takes is your favorite treat, a place you love, and a little time together. Whether it's ice cream on a summer evening, a picnic in the park, or simply playing with your little ones, I'd love to help you document the moments that make your family uniquely yours.

If you're ready for a motherhood or family session that feels relaxed, joyful, and true to your story, I'd love to chat.
