Style Guide

It’s easy to think you need a brand-new outfit for your session, but the best choice is often something you already own and love. When you feel comfortable in what you’re wearing, it shows — you’ll move more naturally, feel more confident, and that effortless ease will come through in your photos.

The same goes for kids! Familiar, well-loved outfits help them feel at ease, while stiff or unfamiliar clothing can be distracting. Prioritizing comfort over perfection lets everyone focus on what really matters — being present, having fun, and creating memories that feel like you.

Where to Start

If your dream outfit doesn’t immediately spring to mind, here are a few tips to help you plan:

CONSIDER THE LOCATION

Wear something that fits the vibe of the location and allows you to move easily — there will be plenty of movement!

If you love wearing heels, bring a pair of slip-ons or sneakers for walking to our destination.

STAY TRUE TO YOU

If you’re not a dress person, don’t feel pressured to wear one. Your photos should reflect you! Opt for something stylish and true to your personality that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

PICK A COLOR PALETTE

I love neutrals and muted earth tones: think blush, cream, muted or deep blues, olive green, tan and similar shades.

Steer clear of large blocks of red, pink, or bright colors, as they can cast unwanted tones onto skin or other family members on sunny days. Small accents of these colors can add a fun touch — like a subtle red trim along the sleeve of a jacket — but it’s best to keep them minimal for a balanced look. Or go for a more soft muted tone of that color.

COORDINATE, DON'T MATCH

While matching outfits can be cute, coordinating is a better way to showcase everyone’s individuality. Use a mix of neutrals with pops of color that complement each other. Start with one outfit (Mom’s is often a great starting point) and build around it using similar tones and textures.

MIND PATTERNS

Patterns can be beautiful when used thoughtfully. Avoid small stripes or overly busy designs, as they can cause visual distortion in photos. Mix patterns strategically — for example, pair florals with stripes or solids — but keep them as statement pieces rather than overloading.

ADD TEXTURE AND LAYERS

Accessories like cardigans, bows, knee-high socks, boots, hats, or scarves add depth and dimension to your photos. Layers are especially great for colder sessions, adding both style and comfort.

DRESS FOR THE WEATHER

Rain or snow? Bring cute outerwear to stay warm and stylish! A cozy jacket or umbrella can even add a fun element to your photos.

Things to keep in mind when selecting outfits

FOR CHILDREN

Avoid Character-Themed Clothing: As much as they may love their Paw Patrol or Frozen shirts, these can be major distractions in photos. Instead, encourage them to wear something simple and timeless. A little trick I like to use: let them pick a fun shirt or pajamas to wear after the session as a reward for wearing the outfit you chose!

Pay Attention to the Details: Make sure they’re wearing matching socks, and yes, double-check that girls are wearing underwear — it happens more often than you’d think!

Vests and Chunky Sweaters: While adorable on babies, these can bunch up and hide their sweet faces during candid moments. Keep this in mind when selecting layers.

FOR MOM

Practical Yet Beautiful: You’ll be holding, bending, and playing with your kids, so choose something that stays in place — no slipping shoulders or revealing more cleavage than you’re comfortable with.

Footwear Matters: Heels are gorgeous but not always practical for every location. Wide heels work better in the mountains, or bring slip-ons for walking and switch to heels when we arrive. And don’t be afraid to pair boots or tennis shoes with dresses — I’m all about blending comfort with style!

Feel Amazing: Never settle on your outfit. Find something that makes you feel beautiful, confident, and comfortable. Choose pieces that fit well and hug you in all the right places.

FOR DAD

Practical for Play: Like Mom, Dad will be holding and playing with the kids, so make sure his shirt is long enough to keep his midsection covered during those moments.

Keep it Simple: A button-up isn’t always necessary. A nice henley shirt can be a great option that feels relaxed but polished.

Confidence is Key: It’s just as important for Dad to feel like himself and confident in what he’s wearing.

Layer Up: Layers are a favorite for Dad! Think jackets, vests, or even a textured sweater for added style and dimension.

Neutral Pants: Instead of defaulting to jeans, consider black, green, or tan pants for a fresh and stylish look.
